wardrobe basics :: boy's wear

Have you ever thought about wearing boy's clothing, or do you already? I've been on the hunt for good basic plaid flannel shirts and it's really hard to find. Most of women's clothing are fitted or they just don't look as "classic" as I'd like them. I love just your basic men's shirt, but men's clothing tend to be slightly too large for me (oh, I still wear them anyway) and I thought I'd check out the boy's section over at LL Bean. I noticed in the comments section that someone else ordered a boy's shirt to wear herself. She says she normally wears an xs petite and ordered size medium. Obviously not everyone can wear boy's clothing, but it might work if you generally wear a size small. I'm considering ordering a shirt in size medium or large. I'll let you know if I do and how it looks.

That is the only way to find the perfect flannel! I do this a lot. I'm a womens sz medium and I wear a boys size large (the sleeves are usually short), works out well for me since my son is 11 and I can just borrow his.

Sometimes I like to wear my husband's shirts or sweat pants, much more comfy.

I just found you through Casey. I went through many of your older posts and really love your blog. I find it very inspiring. I am signing up as a follower and putting you on my blog roll of my sewing blog.

Thank you for this post! It's like you read my mind. I have been so wanting a flannel shirt. My husband and I went to a ton of thrift stores, and they didn't have much to choose from. I love wearing kids clothing...the only thing is that I have long arms. But, I always roll my long sleeves up anyway.

Once in awhile I wear my husband's flannel shirts at home...but he knows once he give it to me I won't hand it back to him. I don't fit his clothing that much he is much much bigger than me.

Vans sells some great ones made especially for women, but they're not too feminine. I love 'em.

Believe it or not, K-mart (sears) has amazing flannel shirts.

I'm about 5'8 and 130 and I wear boy's large flannel shirts from LL Bean. I found one at a thrift store maybe 5 years ago and have since bought a couple new ones for myself. The sleeves are a little short for me but I just roll them up once and it looks fine.

I'm a big fan of crewcut's boys shirts. I usually get size 12 but I'm only 5'3" and the sleeves are a tad short on me, so size 14 would fit a taller person better.

I've been wearing a boy's blazer as my shrunken city blazer for the past two years and I adore it.

I've been actually stalking the boys/mens sections lately at thrift stores. I'm secretly trying to find the perfect shirt in a men's size, so I can recut it and make something more suited (fit-wise) for me. ;)

Interesting thought... I'd worry about the bust being awkwardly snug. I do wear little girls' clothing sometimes, and often just need to nip in the waist a little to make it more flattering. I, too, have been on the hunt for plaid and plaid flannel this year!! So far I have been settling for $12.99 shirts from the junior's section of Marshall's. =(
P.S. Just found your blogs; looks like we have a lot in common! I have been reenacting since I was a little kid.

So far this fall, flannel shirts have definitely been a staple for me. They're perfect for the weather here.
I've tried them from the boys department, but have trouble even finding adult clothing that is long enough in the arms, and am thinking of putting together some arm warmers.
My favorites have all come from thrift stores, mainly the men's rack.

i do this ALL the time! problem with boys shirts though is that the sleeves tend to be too short. i just roll up the sleeves though and problem solved. :)

a little on the pricey side but i really dig steven alan's bf shirt as well - it looks like a shirt you would've stolen from the bf but fits so much dang better in the shoulders....

I love wearing boys' plaid shirts, but I find that in winter they just look too, well, *boyish* on me. Oversized with rolled-up sleeves I can pull off in the summer, though.

Can't help sorry. I've never seen girls' shirt in flannel so far, over here in France... I guess I could order abroad or buy a guy shirt and have it woman fitted. Not too hard to transform since I'm a size L & I'm 5ft10... but we have found i may have a thryoid pb so I may be back to my M size (+ re-gain self-esteem !) next year & buy one of your lovely summer pieces :)

i'm tall and kind of "lanky" - i LOVE wearing boy's/men's trousers. i can wear a 30/32, so it's really easy to find pants that fit ok, right off the rack. i love the subtle pinstripe fabrics that are available and the deep pockets. they always seem to be better made than girls pants in the same price range
